Health and Safety at the University
'I regard adequate control of risks to health and safety as a fundamental part of everyone's job and an integral aspect of everything we do. Excellence in research and teaching requires, by definition, excellent standards of health and safety’ ( the Vice Chancellor in his foreword to the University Health and Safety Policy)
Managing health and safety involves a mixture of central and local policies, procedures and standards. The University sets out generic arrangements for managing health and safety and these are implemented locally by each Department and College. Then, Departments and Colleges supplement this by adding their own arrangements for hazards that are specific to them.
Therefore, there are several routes to find information about health and safety.
- The core health and safety material, managed by the University Health and Safety Service, is accessed by selecting the 'Health and Safety Service' link on the left.
- Local arrangements are available within Department and College information systems. Some have provided quick links via the menu to the left..
- Students should receive health and safety information direct from their Departments and Colleges but some specific information is available from the 'Student' link on the left.
