FAQs

Can I come into residence in College early?

Yes, you can.  It is usually possible for home students to move into College accommodation early, from about 20 September.  An additional charge will be incurred for this.

I am studying part-time and live abroad, Can I be a still member of the College?

Yes, part-time and/or distance learners are Affiliated Members with benefits of membership.  See our section on Membership

I have a special dietary need.  Can the College kitchens accommodate this?

Yes, the College kitchens have specialist chefs who will be able to accommodate special dietary needs (e.g. gluten intolerance, peanut intolerance, allergies, etc)  Please make sure that when you book to eat in College, you state clearly what your dietary need is.

Can I take occasional meals in College?

Yes, you may.  Details about how to do this can be found here.                                                                                                                                 

I am a disabled student.  Can the College offer me suitable accommodation? 

Accommodation for disabled students is limited but we do have accommodation suitable for non-ambulatory and sight-impaired students.  Please make your needs known as soon as possible.  

Can I visit the College before applying?

We would welcome this.  Please get in touch with the Tutor for Postgraduates, Dr. Anthony Bash, if you wish to visit the College before applying.    

What financial assistance can the College offer postgraduate students?

We have resources to make modest grants for travel and conferences viat the Hatfield Trust.  We are not able to make substantial scholarships.  Before you come, you should have in place a sound financial plan that demonstrates you will have the resources to finance your studies while you are in Durham.  We will ask you to send us a copy of your plan before you come to Durham.  For further details about drawing up a financial plan, please see our information on postgraduate student financial planning.
