Who Are We?

The Welfare Team is made up of the Male and Female Welfare Officers and five team members. The team exists to provide welfare support to all members of Grey College. We provide information on a wide range of issues affecting students, whether that be Nightbus operating times or sexual health leaflets. The Welfare Team is ultimately there to provide a confidential student listening support service. So, whatever the issue, we hope you will find in us an approachable and useful resource that you can rely upon throughout your time at University.

The Welfare Officers

The role of the Male and Female Welfare Officers is twofold. Firstly, they are responsible for the running of the many welfare campaigns held throughtout the year at Grey as well as organising the welfare team. Secondly, they are available in a support role - remaining contactable 24 hours a day, holding drop-in sessions, responding to online anonymous welfare support submissions and ensuring the welfare of the team members themselves. We like to think we're an approachable and friendly bunch, so please feel free to contact either the officers or the team with any issues.

Pippa Broadway
Being Welsh, Pippa is often found singing,, playing rugby or enjoying a drink at Fabios. She is a first year Politics, Philosophy and Economics student who spends most of her spare time on the river or trying to perfect the art of couch surfing. She loves to cook and cant wait to have her own Kitchen next year at the Barn on Hallgarth street , so feel free to drop in for a good cup of tea, chat and a fresh slice of cake.

Tom McMinigal
Tom is studying Economics and Politics, and next year will be living at Elvet Crescent (the lazy man's destination!) He comes from the island of Jersey and spends a lot of time on the beach attempting to tan, but turning out like a lobster. Tom enjoys pretty much all sport but plays most like he has two left feet. His idea of heaven involves a nice cup of rosy lee and a few games of Call of Duty! He is also a bit of a nerd when it comes to most genres of music and he loves his films.

The Welfare Team

John Oliver
John is a Natural Science student from Southport (near Liverpool), and next year will be living in the viaduct. John will try to play and every sport thrown at him, often with the misplaced confidence of a professional but the actual skill of a herring. He enjoys a wide-range of other activities from beatboxing to the Christian Union, and although his dancing can be described as ‘different’, his ideal night out is throwing down some shapes to any music with a beat.

Rudolph Birgelen
Rudolph couldnt decide what to study so he tried to do a bit of everything which turned out to be psychology, history and politics but who knows what it will be next year. Apart from that he is definitely too proud of the fact that he comes from the coolest city in the world, Berlin. Otherwise this German dabbles as Greys tennis captain, mediocre guitar playing and acchieves full honours in general laziness

Sonali Mackenna-Nethsingha
I'm Sonali (or Snarlster depending on who you ask!) and I'm studying Archaeology and Anthropology. I'll be living on Whinney Hill in my second year which is really close to Grey so feel free to pop in whenever. I've always lived abroad; currently my mum is in France and my dad is in the Congo so I've done my fair bit of travelling! I like to think I have a range of interests- though admittedly I can be a bit of a geek, I enjoy playing my bit of lacrosse and also gracing the Durham nightlife on occasion. On the whole basically, just pop in for a chat, big or small, and I'll do my best to help!

Alice Tudor
Alice is a 2nd year studying economics with a bit of Anthropology on the side. She’ll either be attempting any type of sport (but probably racing on the river) or in the DSU doing silly things for the charity ActionAid. She’s up for anything from crazy adventures around the world to lounging in the JCR. She also likes to think she can draw, but actually can’t, so pop in for a chat with some felt tips if you ever want some quality procrastination

David Benhamou
David is a final year physical geography student who will be living in college next year. David is originally from Birmingham and throughout his time at grey has played many a sport, his favorites are Hockey, Rowing and Pool, If not playing sport he can be found drinking coffee or taking photos somewhere around Durham. David's aim in life is to run a hostel on the coast of Brazil (once he's rich!)however if this fails he will be happy with any job that involves travelling. David is full of energy and can always be seen with a smile on his face.

James Mullinder, JCR President
The JCR President James Mullinder is another useful point of contact for any welfare queries. He is, like the rest of the team, always available for a chat. He lives in Flat 4, Elvet South.
