Hey Grey!

In this blog I will give you some examples of Business Angels, a website to sign up to and a reminder about the CV workshop taking place on Saturday 3rd November!

Business Angels

Jenny Ball – HR Manager at Ford Motor Company – graduated in 1995 with a History degree

She is happy to talk to anyone interested in a career in HR and can also provide a more general overview of anyone looking to work in the Automotive industry.

Michael Cannon – Senior Scientist at Proctor and Gamble – graduated in 2002 with a Chemistry degree and also has a PGCE qualification

Can talk to people about applying for internships with P&G as well as share his experience of the company.

Chris Norman – Trainee Solicitor at Clifford Chance – graduated in 2011 with a law degree

Has undertaken internships at Clifford Chance and Hogan Lovells as well as successfully being invited for interview at several magical circle firms.  He is therefore a great person to talk to about any application/interview related issues.  He was also Law Society President and careers officer so has lots of contacts.

A reminder that a great way of keeping on top of job/internship application deadlines is by signing up to www.Top100GraduateEmployers.com

Finally, please remember that the CV and careers workshop is on Saturday 3 November from 10am until 4pm in the Pennington Suite.  Please join the Facebook group and if you want a one to one session and haven’t yet sent me your CV then there may still be a chance as there are a few spaces left.  So send me your CV asap if you want any guidance.

Hello Grey,

I hope that you are all enjoying your first week back (or second if you are a Fresher), please read on because this blog is packed full of exciting information and opportunities.

Firstly, for those of you that are not already aware, Grey has a scheme called Business Angels where you can contact alumni that have a career that you might be interested to get advice.  There is a brilliant website (www.greyassociation.co.uk/angels) which lists all the alumni that are taking part so you can search by subject, job sector or name etc.  It is a great way to get ideas about possible jobs and to find out about how to get into different areas.

Here are some examples of Angels you could contact:
Jules Benham (BBC Broadcast Journalist) -  graduated in 2006 with a geography degree, taken internships with BBC Radio Derby, BBC East Midlands Today and BBC Countryfile.  Has information about different skills needed for media, the importance of experience and the reality of the media world.
Martin Murrell (Director of Consumer Experience for Capital One) – graduated in 1985 with a degree in physics.  Has a wealth of experience in the finance sector and has great advice about different roles within the banking industry.
Al Strang (Brand Manager at GlaxoSmithKline for Aquafresh) – graduated in 2004 with a degree in geography.  Keen to be emailed questions about marketing.  Has advice about applying for marketing jobs.

Another great way to find out about employers is through reading the new edition of The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers book.  Here is a message from the Brand Manager:
The new 2012-2013 edition of The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers book is out now.  Collect your free copy today from the Durham Careers, Employability and Enterprise Centre – while stocks last!  Based on research with over 17,000 graduates who left university in the summer of 2012, the new Top 100 book is the definitive guide to Britain’s most respected and sought-after graduate employers.  Find out which employer is number one for a record ninth year, read up on the graduate vacancies that Top 100 employers are offering in 2013, and check the latest starting salaries for graduates leaving university next summer.
www.Top100GraduateEmployers.com

Finally, there is a careers fair at the DSU on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th October.  Head down and pick up some information from 11:00 until 15:30.

Have a great week!
