The Phoenix Ball is an annual black-tie event traditionally held on the Wednesday after Grey Day once summer exams are over. It is the biggest and best night of the Grey social calendar!
Traditionally held in a venue away from college, the Ball normally starts at around 5pm with drinks in college, then continues with another drinks reception at the venue before a seated three course meal.
After the meal there is further entertainment, usually including a band and a DJ as well as a variety of other activities. In the past, these activities have included:
Laser shoot-out Dodgems A ferris wheel Shisha pipes Casino tables ..and much more!We then return to college for the "Survivor's Breakfast". For the past two years, a silent disco has been held in the JCR and on the lawn after this, with the sun rising over Durham Cathedral as a beautiful backdrop. The most hardcore Grey students make it to the survivor's photo shortly after sunrise.
The Phoenix Ball is a themed event, organised by the two ball chairs with the help of the committee. Past themes have included Casino Royale, Arabian Nights, Alice in Wonderland and Carnival. Decorations at the venue and in college complement the theme and add to the special atmosphere of the evening.
The Ball is the perfect opportunity for Grey students to get dressed up and have a fantastic time with their friends. It's also the last big event for finalists, and recently Honourary Life Memberships to the JCR have been awarded after the meal making the evening even more special.
