Changes at the DSU

Hi everyone,

As I’ve been mentioning, there are a number of changes at the DSU which are going down this week. If people are interested, I’ve written a report on these changes which is saved in the Senior DSU Rep’s file directory under the blogs tab. This tells you what the DSU’s ‘Standing Orders’ are, how they are going to be changing, and what the positive and negative points are.

As this is something which DSU Council is going to vote on this week, should you have any points to raise or should you be interested in coming along, please drop me an email (if you don’t know what Council is, see the aforementioned document).

By the time you’ve finished reading the two and a half pages, you should know about as much about the DSU as I do. Feel free to give it a read.

Thanks,

Tom

Vote now in the DSU Elections- it only takes 40 seconds!!

Afternoon Grey,

Do not underestimate the importance of voting in the current DSU elections. The elected candidates will help shape your university experience and aid redevelopment of the DSU building.

What do you want from your DSU?

  • More exciting charity events?
  • Fight for a better education?
  • Greater Welfare service?
  • Better accommodation advice?
  • A food court?
  • A cinema?
  • Better society interaction?
  • A dance studio?
  • A Jazz Club?
  • As sports bar?

These are just a few ideas that could be implemented into the new designs of the DSU, and it those that you choose to elect that represent your views and aim to get you what you want out of the your students union. I urge you to vote as these figures, not only have their individual roles but are the figureheads of the Union.

Currently, Grey are in 4th place, lets get this higher and try and beat Collingwood. Very few livers out have voted, this needs to change. It takes just 40 seconds. Lets show the university, that Grey is the best college!!! View the manifestos and vote on the link below.

National Student Survey- for finalists only

Hey all Grey Finalists,

Have you filled in the National Student Survey yet? It's pivotal you do, this is your chance to say what you think of your university but also win some money for Grey JCR.

At the moment Grey has the least amount of respondents. This needs to change.

Why?

The college with the greatest response rate receives £500 and if this is achieved Grey's Senior Tutor, Ian Spencer, has kindly pledged an extra £100. Last year Grey was given money as we topped the Pee in the pot scheme. The money went to the plasma TV and DVD player in Fountains Hall but also the volley ball net.  Just think what even more money could bring, especially in our new JCR.

So please, please fill in the National Student Survey to help the university improve and win some money for Grey JCR. It doesn't take long, just click on this link: http://www.thestudentsurvey.com/

Hope you all had an awesome weekend and enjoyed Barfest.

See you around

Sam

DSu Referendums: it only takes a minute

Hey Grey,

Hope you are all well and those who went on the Epic Day out had an awesome time!!!

The two DSU referendums are still being voted on and it is key that those who haven't voted do so.

It only takes a minute!!!

The DSU can really influence your student experience at the university and thus it is key that you vote on the changes being proposed in the constitution as these impact upon you. A brief summary is provided below:

The changes will

1. Increase the number of sabbatical trustees (and therefore officers) from 4 to 5

2. Acknowledge the 10 JCRs that have become DSOs, and change the membership to ensure

the Presidents can sit as student representatives on University Committees

3. Change JCRs to Common Rooms to ensure that we include the support of MCRs in the

Union’s objects

4. Expanded the Union’s objects in line with the model SU constitution

5. State that a Student Trustee must be a student at the time of his/her election

6. Shift the provisions of the Union Council into the Standing Orders to ensure flexibility

7. Reduce the quorum of Annual Members’ Meetings as the AMM has not been quorate in

recent years

8. Remove the responsibility of the AMM to elect trustees, as these are done by cross campus

ballot

9. Add to the membership of the Union any sabbatical officers employed by the Union

10. Include provision for the expulsion of members in line with the model SU Constitution

All you have to do is log in with your ITS name and password and select either, Yes or No.

It only takes a minute!!!

Please vote by clicking through to this link, there is also a referendum on the DSU name change, in order so we can still call Durham Students Union, Durham Students Union: here is a link if you want more information:
