Sports & Societies Budget & JCR Accounts

Hi Grey!

Hope you've all had a good weekend and that the term's going well so far!
Just to let anybody that's interested know that the JCR Accounts and Sports & Societies Budget 2013 have been uploaded onto the Assistant Treasurer blog on the website, if you want to take a look then head to http://www.dur.ac.uk/grey.jcr/blogs/viewBlog.php?id=17#.
I would really encourage checking them out, it's an interesting read if you want to know more about that the JCR actually spends its money on. If you have any questions about budget allocation or about the accounts then please get in touch and I'll be happy to discuss it.
A few points to note about the budget:
1) The Composition Fee budget (the one which pays for sports, societies, welfare, newspapers and admin) has been running at a loss for the last few years, so we're aiming to bring this down over the next couple of years so that we're running a bit more evenly, hence there has been a drop in the allocation for 2013.
2) Much of the budget has often been left unclaimed in previous years. We don't know if this is just because of people not buying what they've been allocated, or if they've paid out of their own money and never submitted the receipts. We want this to stop! This money is paid in the Composition Fee from the University to help develop and support Grey's sports and societies and we want to get the most out of it, so don't delay to claim something that you've been allocated. Once 2013's over, you can't claim on anything in this year's budget!
3) All sports and societies are automatically granted the 'essentials' that they need to function, such as league affiliation, first aid training, and referees fees.
4) Anything else is up for debate. High JCR attendance often results in teams being allocated so-called 'extras', whilst a low attendance will often result in the sport or society being denied the these 'extras'. So keep this in mind over the next year, and make sure that you sign in for your sport/society at JCR meetings!
Also, I thought that I'd recap the procedure for claiming money back from the JCR for sports and societies, so that everyone knows how this happens...
What Can I Claim?

Take a look at the Sports & Societies budget, if your sport or society is down as having been allocated something, then please do use it, we want you to get as much as possible out of your sports and societies. All Team Durham invoices come straight to me so you don't have to worry about these!

How Do I Claim?

You will need to keep a receipt for everything that you buy (preferably a VAT receipt, as it makes my job a whole lot easier...), or if it's a service that's being provided, such as refereeing, then a signed note will suffice in place of a proper receipt. If you don't have a receipt, you can't claim I'm afraid!
You can get your receipts to me either by email or by putting them in the Exec pigeon hole in the post room. Please please please make sure that you let me know what you're claiming for and who you are, there are so many sports and societies that if I don't know what it's for then I may not be able to reimburse you correctly.
How Will I Get My Money?
You will receive a cheque for your reimbursement from the JCR. I will be around at JCR meetings with all of the cheques, so come and find me at one of these to collect yours. If you can't make a JCR meeting, or would prefer to receive your cheque sooner, then please just email me and I can either place your cheque in an envelope in your pigeon hole, or arrange a mutually convenient time to get the cheque to you.
If you have any questions about this process, or anything to do with Sports & Societies finances, then please get in touch.
Have a great week! :)
