Accommodation
All Freshers live in Grey for their first year at Durham. There are four main accommodation blocks and Freshers are usually shared between Oswald, Hollingside and Holgate with Elvet reserved primarily for returning third years. In your second year you'll experience the joys of living out in your own house! For your final year, the most popular option is to move back into college with all your mates whilst having food cooked for you in your stressful final year! Most rooms in college are fairly big with a sink, desk, wardrobe, shelving, bed and some rooms even have ensuites! In addition there is a lamp, bin, mirror and a Grey College mug in each room.
Room Sharing
You may have to share for one term during your first year at Grey. Sharing is not the end of the world by any means, in fact it's usually loads of fun and some people even ask to share together for the whole year! If you're sharing in your first term you will be notified by college and given the contact details for your roommate, so you can get in touch with them before you come. Most people find it comforting to know that they'll have someone when they arrive that they've already made friends with. The room becomes the social hub of the corridor, as it's the biggest, and a bigger room means extra storage! There are systems in place for pairing up people with similar ‘likes' and sleeping patterns so generally everyone who shares gets on really well.
Catered vs. Self-Catered
Most freshers choose catered accommodation, as college food caters to lots of different tastes and always offers vegetarian and halal options. However, there are a limited number of self-catered rooms available.
