Postgraduate-only Events

The MCR organises a number of social events for postgraduates. Postgraduates also dine together formally at postgraduate guest nights and the College provides a number of events (receptions, dinners and lunches) specifically for postgraduates throughout the year. From October 2011 there will also be a number of dedicated seminars arranged by the College in which graduate students discuss and explain their research.

In addition, postgraduates may also participate in art exhibitions, concerts, public lectures and seminars that are put on by the Master and Senior Common Room (SCR) for the benefit of all members of the College.

Postgraduates can also join in with any of the many events organised by the JCR. These include small events such as open-mic nights which all the college can compete in, arts events such as films nights, exhibitions and photo walks, charity events and talent contests and much more.

The union also runs a number of large events which are the focal points of the year. A few of these include:

  •       Grey Fireworks Display – The largest such display in County Durham, conducted to music, and regularly attended by over a thousand people, the Fireworks Display is an event that really puts Grey on the map.
  •       BarFest – An event celebrating drinks from around the world and live music. The Bar orders selections of drinks and beers from around the world for the students to sample, and student bands have the chance to perform at the event.
  •       Phoenix Ball – A large black-tie ball often held outside of the College grounds to which to entire college is invited. Last year this took place in Reignton Meadows in County Durham and featured numerous acts such as a magician, numerous bands and the Bar Wizards from Britain’s Got Talent.
  •       Grey Day – A one-day music festival held on the college grounds in the sun to celebrate the end of exams. Numerous events are booked from bouncy castles, climbing walls, candy floss stalls and much more, including a large stage on which student bands perform from dawn till past dusk.
