Our History
Grey College was founded in 1959 by the University of Durham in response to a Government Report at the time that expressed concern about the shortage of scientists and engineers that were being trained in the UK. Originally, Grey admitted only men scientists and engineers, but that soon changed and now College members, of both genders, read for University courses across all faculties.Over the years the College has grown from an initial membership of 300 students to around 850 undergraduate and graduate students in 2011. Grey is very proud of its former students (alumni), many of whom have had considerable success in their chosen walks of life. Our alumni provide immense support for the current generation of students in the College through the Trust, the Friends of Grey and the College Association. If you would like to read more about the early days of the College, read From the Ashes: the Story of Grey College , by Nigel Watson. Published by James and James, 2004. ISBN 0-904022-00-6.
