Greenspace

Student Environment Group

What is the Greenspace Student Environment Group?

The GSEG is a University initiative consisting of elected college Student Environmental Reps and overseen by the Sustainability Coordinator. Its key objective is to encourage students to adopt environmentally sustainable lifestyles.

The Group meets fortnightly during term time in order to

  • share ideas on how to encourage sustainable behaviours amongst students
  • plan student-orientated college and University environmental initiatives
  • represent student views on University-related environmental matters

The Sustainability Coordinator provides support for the Student Environment Reps and acts as a useful link to the University administration.

Student Environment Reps also share information with their college's student body and work closely with their staff Environment Champion and College Environment Team in order to make their college more sustainable.

Student Environmental Reps' Handbook

Here you can find a copy of the Student Environmental Reps' Handbook 2011-12. This has been given to all Reps and contains helpful information on Greenspace, the role of the Student Environmental Rep and how students can be lead more environmentally sustainable lives.

Media and Achievements

Since its launch in 2006, the GSEG has been an invaluable resource for improving sustainability within the University.  It is a pioneer of behavioral change schemes in higher education in the UK and has been a template for other universities.

The Group has been extensively covered by the media, including national newspapers such as the Independent, the Guardian and the Sun, local media such as Durham FM and the Northern Echo, as well student media such as the award-winning Durham 21, Palatinate and the Sanctuary.

The Group was also awarded the Green Gown Award for 'Best Student Initiative' in 2008.

Please note that before 1st September 2010, the Student Environment Group was called the Sustainable Living Action Group and so, at times, may be referred to as such.
