Environment Week 16th - 22nd November 2009
The University had its first 'Environment Week' last year. Starting on Monday 16th November, the week was filled with activities and messages relating to living and working in a more sustainable way. The week had a full programme of events with many staff and students taking part.
Activities in Environment Week:
Other activities in the week included lunchtime talks by the Energy Saving Trust, recycling displays, alternative travel to work days, guided walks, guided cycle rides, bike maintenance sessions, litter picks and evening talks. All activities were free of charge.

The week began with an Environment Fair on Monday 16th November. There were a variety of both internal and external exhibitors offering advice and services on topics such as recycling, transport, energy and Fairtrade. There were also various competitions and activities including a driving simulator at Durham, an electric bike at Queen's, suggestion boxes and much more. The Fair was open to all staff and students and both the Chancellor, Bill Bryson, and the Vice-Chancellor attended the Fair in Durham. Ruth Palmer (Van Mildert College) won the wind-up and solar powered radio, torch and mobile phone charger for attending the fair!

Alternative travel to work day - This focussed on asking people to try a new way of getting to and from the University in a more sustianable way. People who wanted to take part were asked to choose any day which was most convenient for them and then the next day to send an email to Tara Duncan, letting her know what they did, how long it took and how they found it. These stories can be found here.
-
College litter picks - these took place in colleges; tidying up our grounds and bringing attention to the amout of litter we produce (much of which could possibly have been recycled). Bill Bryson took part in the Trevelyan litter pick on the afternoon of the 17th November.
-
University Energy sticker - we need a new eye-catching energy sticker for use in all of our buildings. This sticker will act as a reminder to switch off all non essential lights! Try your hand at a design and then send it to Tara Duncan by the 22nd January. The winning design will be the University's new energy sticker.
-
Winner of Christmas e-card competition - The three winning entries were chosen by the Vice-Chancellor and are now available for use via a page on the environment web site. Sending an e-card will save the production and transport associated with sending paper cards.
