Staff Candidates

Staff candidates are members of staff who have successfully applied to be registered on a postgraduate programme.

Candidates registered must abide by the normal regulations for the degree concerned subject to the following modifications.

  • for higher degrees by thesis, both examiners must be external examiners and not members of the staff of this University.
  • staff members will be registered as part-time students, and are not permitted to study on a full-time basis.

From the academic year 2007/08 onwards, for new staff candidates, the tuition fees for the higher degree programme will need to be met by the staff candidate's host department. No funding is available from Central Funds for Higher Degree programmes. Candidates are required to pay an examination entry fee.

The Core Regulations for Research Degrees by Thesis or Composition contain further information on the specific regulations for staff candidates for those degrees.

The Human Resources webpages contain further information for staff wishing to undertake Durham degrees.
