Geography BA

A majority of modules in Level 2 and 3 focus on Human Geography and social science topics. Students are also allowed to take a limited number of options from the Geography BSc list at levels 1 and 2. There is academic progression from Level 1 through to Level 3. For the Geography (BA) modules, we describe Level 1 as generic Human Geography, Level 2 as sub-disciplines and Level 3 as themes. At Level 3 you will be dealing with material that is specialist and on the cutting edge of research. These options range across the spectrum of our research.

Level 1 Compulsory modules:

  • Human Geography (20 UCUs)
  • Introduction to Geographical Research (40 UCUs)
  • Physical Geography (20 UCUs)

Level 1 Elective modules:

  • 2 modules (40 UCUs total) from a list approved by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Health
  • We also offer two Level 1 Elective modules open to BA students:
    Cities
    Environment & Society

Level 2 Compulsory modules:

  • Social Research in Geography (40 UCUs) - including compulsory residential fieldwork
  • Theory and Concepts in Contemporary Human Geography (20 UCUs)

These form the required foundation for your dissertation in Level 3.

Level 2 Elective modules:

Three modules (60 UCUs total). The modules may vary from year to year but this is typical of the range:

  • Development, Society and the Environment
  • Environmental Processes and Management
  • GIS and Remote Sensing
  • Political Geography
  • Social and Cultural Geography
  • Urban Geography
  • One module from the BSc list (see below) or, with permission, one module from another Department

Level 3 Compulsory module:

  • Dissertation based on social research methods (40 UCUs)

Level 3 Elective modules:

Four modules (80 UCUs total). The modules may vary from year to year but this is typical of the range:

  • Urban Change in Europe (Berlin field excursion)
  • Field Studies in Rural Asia (Thailand field excursion)
  • Geographies of Transformation
  • Geography, Gender and Change
  • Geographies of Health & Health Care
  • Hazard and Risk
  • Philosophy and Geography
  • Specialised Aspects of Human Geography (Select 2 or 4 from a list)

The Specialised Aspects of Human Geography list will vary from year to year but this is typical of the range: Cyberspace Geographies; Development in Southeast Asia; Geographies of Affect and Emotion; Governing Cities; Memory, Space and Place; Visual Culture.
