Biography

Professor Clare Bambra is a health geographer researching at the interface between social epidemiology and public health policy.

She is Director of Durham University's interdisciplinary Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing. She is a Senior Investigator with FUSE: The MRC-funded Centre for Research Excellence in Translational Research in Public Health and a Senior Investigator in the NIHR-funded School for Public Health Research. In 2012 she was awarded a Leverhulme Research Leadership Award to examine Local Health Inequalities in an Age of Austerity. She is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Clare studied political science (BSocSc, Birmingham) and comparative public policy (MA, PhD, Manchester) before moving into public health. Her research is highly interdisciplinary, applying theories and methods between the social sciences and epidemiology.

Her research focuses on health inequalities and the social determinants of health. She has three main areas of interest:

(1) labour markets and the relationships between work, worklessness and health;

(2) the influence of welfare state policies and political structures on international variations in public health and health inequalities;

(3) Tackling health inequalities by addressing the wider social determinants of health.

She currently teaches on the on the phase 1 Medicine programme, the MA in Health, Risk and Public Policy as well as the MSc in Public Policy and Health. She is available for PhD supervision in any of the above areas.
