Connecting people, participation and place: the first international conference of participatory geographies', organised by the Geography Department, took place in Durham on 14th - 15th January 2008.

Over 120 academics, students, community researchers and activists from around the world attended to share their experiences of collaborative research between universities and community groups. The first day involved papers and visual displays on the key theoretical and institutional issues involved in doing Geography differently. The second day was given over to workshops on methods for research and social action, followed by an Open Space process to develop and consolidate key issues raised by participants.
