Governance of Geoengineering
(10 January 2012)
In a recently published article in 'Nature' Professor Phil Macnaghten and his colleague Professor Richard Owen from the University of Exeter Business School, describe the first attempt to govern a climate-engineering research project.
The article entitled 'Good Governance for Geoengineering' examines the Stratospheric Particle Injection for Climate Engineering (SPICE) study which is the first attempt to test a solar radiation management technology outside a laboratory. Using a framework for responsible innovation being developed for the UK research councils, Phil and Richard describe the reasons that led to the halting of the UK's first field trial of climate engineering, and the conditions of how and whether this geoengineering method should proceed.
