Education
The Old Fulling Mill is itself a piece of history and school sessions are designed to make the most of this unique setting to produce not only history sessions but also works of art, design and drama.
Why come to the Old Fulling Mill?
School sessions take inspiration from the museum's Roman, Greek and Tudor collections. These Key Stage 2 sessions include an object handling session, art workshops, literacy and numeracy activities and drama activities. More bespoke sessions have included lessons on the history of Durham.
Our handling collections allow students to experience the thrill of touching a genuine Greek artefact. During Roman and Greek sessions children can try on the museum's collection of replica armour to see how they would like to be a Roman legionary or a Spartan hoplite. Tudor sessions are conducted in full costume and as well as sessions in the museum we offer a Tudor trail around Durham, looking at the wonderful architecture that survives in the city centre.
What do you need to know?
All visits are led by our experienced Education Officer and make use of our dedicated classroom. Visits are adapted to the visiting group's own requirements and the Education Officer can also work together the education officers at other Durham University attractions such as the Palace Green Library, Oriental Museum and Botanic Garden to create coordinated programmes across multiple sites for those making longer visits.
Free Hazard Identification sheets are available to assist you in writing your Risk Assessments for each site.
Visitors should note that the Old Fulling Mill has limited disability access, with no disability access to the first floor. Due to the listed status of the building we are unable to undertake any major redevelopments in order to improve access. Due to the small size of the Mill building, maximum group size is 35.
The museum can provide space for groups to eat packed lunches and a small café is available where teachers and helpers can purchase tea/coffee and light snacks.
Costs for educational visits are £3 per child, teachers/helpers free
