Access & Facilities
The Old Fulling Mill is committed to be as accessible as possible for all visitors given the restrictions caused by the nature of the historic building and unique location. A summary of our facilities is set out below and a detailed access statement laid out on VAQAS guidelines is available to download at the bottom of the page for those visitors who require more detailed information.
Please contact the museum on 0191 334 1823 to allow us to assist you in planning your visit.
Access to the Museum
The Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology is situated on the river bank path below Durham Cathedral. This location provides visitors with an opportunity to enjoy a beautiful riverside walk as part of their visit. However, it also means that there is limited disabled access to the building. The nearest public parking places are several hundred metres away in any direction. The pathway approaching the museum from both directions has now been tarmaced over, however from Silver Street visitors need to descend a flight of steps. The path down from Palace Green is now open. Winter visitors should be aware that there is only limited lighting along the paths. Prebends bridge is now open for pedestrians (February 2012).
Parking for people with disabilities
We can arrange for disabled parking directly outside the museum entrance if we are notified in advance, so please do contact us if the approach to the museum is going to be difficult for you.
Wheelchair access
The entrance to the museum is via a step, but once inside the ground floor is accessible. However, there is no access to the first floor. Toilets are provided but there is no disabled toilet. Due to the location and listed status of the building we are unable to undertake any major improvements in order to improve access. Seating is provided on the ground floor and we are happy to bring refreshments downstairs for visitors who cannot go up to the cafe area.
Assistance dogs
Guide and hearing dogs are welcome to accompany their owners around the museum. A water bowl can be provided.
Family Friendly
The Old Fulling Mill Museum of Archaeology is committed to the Kids in Museums manifesto. We do not currently have space for baby changing facilities but we are happy to warm bottles or baby food for visitors using the museum refreshment area and there are a range of activities for children of different ages in the galleries.
