Bridging to Masters

PLEASE NOTE:

We are now accepting applications to start the course in January 2011

“I had 5 years work experience in the field, so I was thrilled to hear that I could join this short bridging programme and go straight on to
studying for my Masters”

A new challenge

The Voluntary Sector Workforce is becoming a graduate profession. However, only 33% of the workforce have a degree as previously the minimum qualification was a diploma (Voluntary Sector Skills Survey 2007).

Making the most of your experience

As a career professional you already have many of the qualities necessary for success in higher education; motivation; self-management; time-keeping; and above all, experience. That is why we have developed a short Bridging to Masters programme that can help you get ahead of the game and obtain a qualification that reflects your true ability.

A unique opportunity

The bridging to Masters programme is a unique opportunity to enter Masters level study. It is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge required for postgraduate learning, even if you have a limited academic background. Successful completion of the programme will entitle you to apply directly to the Community & Youth Work MA programme.

Outstanding quality

Durham’s Community and Youth Work Masters programme is a professionally recognised higher qualification suitable for those who wish to operate at the highest professional level. You will study in a thriving centre for professional development that is nationally and internationally recognised for the quality of its teaching and research.

Work whilst you study

Modern employers recognise the value of keeping their staff at the forefront of their profession. Because of this, many employers are receptive to day release for their staff to attend training. With this in mind the bridging to Masters programme is delivered one day a week over 11weeks, starting in January and ending in June, and the Masters programme is available both over 12 months full-time, or 24 months on a one-day-per-week basis (see the related link on the right hand side of this page). This really is an outstanding professional development opportunity.

Who can apply?

Applicants without a degree but with a wealth of professional experience are now able to apply for the MA Community and Youth Work or MA Community Practice in conjunction with the Graduate Certificate in Community and Youth Work. Subject to interview, suitably qualified applicants may be made a deferred offer for the appropriate MA programme which is conditional on successful completion of the Graduate Certificate.
