Theatre
Durham University has a longstanding tradition of student theatre, and the drama scene is vibrant, varied and thriving. Durham Student Theatre (DST) acts both as the umbrella organisation for over 35 theatre companies, and as the union for over 800 members. It provides theatre companies with props, set, tech, box office staff, marketing assistance, and guidance, as well as offering numerous opportunities to actors, directors and producers. Durham Student Theatre Tech provides budding technicians with the chance to learn how to operate lights, sound and the fly system, and all members of DST receive discounts on every student performance that takes place in Durham.
Durham Student Theatre is unique among student theatre societies, being housed in a fully functional 220-seat theatre in an 18th century building, which is completely student-run. As well as a diverse programme of shows at the Assembly Rooms, performances take place in a host of other venues, such as college chapels, the Gala theatre, the Castle’s Senate suite and Durham Cathedral. During the summer holidays, DST also offers students the opportunity to perform at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and to volunteer to teach drama in Zambia.
The annual Durham Drama Festival is a week-long event held in February, during which new writing by Durham students and alumni is performed. Other exciting events take place throughout the year, include an introductory evening for Freshers and the annual D’Oscars awards ceremony.
Whether you wish to act, direct, review, or tech a show, visit the DST website to find out about joining and find out more about our theatre companies.
