Guest and Delegate Information
- Access Statement for Hatfield College (last modified: 21 July 2009)
Hatfield College is a 5 minute taxi ride (about £3) from Durham Station. All the taxi drivers know the college, so you won't need to give them directions. Alternatively, if you're carrying light luggage, the walk from the station through town is picturesque and will take about 20 minutes. There is a tourist map on the platform.
As the College is in the historic centre of the city, parking is limited. 20 spaces are available in vacation periods to guests of the College but these are subject to availability. To drive to the College you have to enter the city’s congestion charge zone for which a £2 charge is levied when you leave between 10.00am-4.00pm Monday-Saturday. Alternatively there is a park and ride scheme in Durham or you can make use of one of the close-by city centre car parks (subject to change).
From the South: drive north on the A1(M) and exit at Junction 62. Take the A690 signposted for Durham. Exit the motorway and follow the sign marked Durham City and Consett (this is a dual carriageway). After three miles, at the first roundabout, take the second main exit which crosses under a pedestrian footbridge and gives, immediately in front of you, a magnificent view of the Cathedral, Castle and City. The road is downhill and at the bottom is another roundabout. Take the second exit left and travel up the slip road. At the top, turn left into the Market Place (road is signposted "Access Only"). Travel forward at the traffic lights into North Bailey. The road is narrow and uphill. After about 600 yards look for iron railings on the left - this is Hatfield College. Please check in at the Porters' Lodge at the Main Gate.
From the North: drive south on the A1(M) and exit at Junction 62. Take the A690 signposted for Durham and Consett. Turn right at the roundabout and then follow directions as above.
Travelling to Hatfield by car? Have you considered public transport?
Hatfield College is in the very heart of the historic City, situated close to Durham's magnificent World Heritage Cathedral and Durham Castle. All of the main visitor attractions in this small city are within easy walking distance. Because of it's prime location, Hatfield is situated in the City's congestion zone and parking in College is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis. For these reasons, we encourage visitors to consider travelling to Hatfield by public transport.
