Green Move Out
Every year, with a large number of students who graduate and leave, there is a huge number of unwanted items left behind. In order to divert these items from landfill, the University collects and redistributes these items through its award-winning Green Move Out and Reuse Schemes.
Around mid-May, collection bags are distributed to all students living in college accommodation and to students living out in Durham City. These are then collected, sorted, stored and offered for reuse by students at the start of the following academic year.
A huge range of items are collected, including:
- Clothes, shoes and fancy dress
- Books
- CDs and DVDs
- Bedding
- Electrical items
- Pots, pans, crockery and cutlery
- Food (tinned and non-perishable only)
- Sports equipment
- Furniture
- Miscellaneous (toys, games, ornaments, washing racks, bicycles etc.
Further information on Green Move 2012 can be found below (details of Green Move Out 2013 to follow shortly).

Reuse Events
The items collected during the Green Move Out collections are redistributed to new/returning students at the beginning of the next academic year through Reuse Events. At these Events, all students can take any of the collected items in return for a monetary donation of their choice. All the donations, as well as any remaining items, are then given to a variety of charities.
In 2011/12 over £2000 was raised for the following charities:
