I have have been at Durham since 1989, starting off as a lecturer in what was then the English Language section of the Department of English, which subsequently became the Department of Linguistics and English Language. Following the Department's closure, I moved to the English Language Centre as Academic Director in 2004, becoming Director of the Centre in 2007. I am also director of the Centre's MA TESOL programmes.
Prior to coming to Durham, I taught at the University of Edinburgh and at Odense Universitet (Denmark).
I teach at undergraduate and postgraduate level on language structure (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax), the history of English, regional variation in English and World Englishes.
