Welcome to the English Language Centre

The English Language Centre is a busy department that has a number of distinct functions.

As an academic department we offer MA programmes in TESOL and Applied Language Studies for TESOL and a range of undergraduate modules to students across the University.

As a support department we specialise in EAP (English for Academic Purposes) and through our Summer Pre-sessional and Year-round Pre-sessional programmes we prepare hundreds of international students for life in their academic departments.  Our EAP provision also includes In-sessional courses which provide academic language and literacy support to international sutdents throughout their studies.  Through our Academic Writing Unit we offer tailored academic literacy and study skills support to students (home and international) in departments around the University.

Finally, we have considerable expertise in offering teacher development to English Language Teachers; we currently run short courses for higher education institutions around the world, including China, Hong Kong, Japan and Russia.

Pre-sessional EAP Teachers, Summer 2012

(24 February 2012)

Recruitment is now complete for our Pre-sessional and Pre-MBA programmes which will run during July, August and September 2012.

English for Academic Purposes teachers will teach academic English language and literacy on the summer Pre-sessional/Pre-MBA programmes to postgraduate and/or undergraduate students who have been conditionally accepted onto degree programmes at the University.  These are intensive courses that aim to prepare students for study at the University by improving their academic English and developing the research skills required for study.  The Pre-sessional courses are organised into discipline-specific streams (Law, MA/MSc Business, Social Sciences, TESOL, Translation Studies, Science and Engineering) and teachers will be allocated to a particular stream.
