Student Societies and Other Events

Our students run their own English Society which provides the opportunity for theatre visits (particularly to the RSC season in Newcastle in February each year). There is a strong tradition of student drama within the University as a whole.

The Centre for Poetry and Poetics hosts a number of literary events for students and the general public, including an annual Basil Bunting Lecture/Reading and a series of poetry readings, 'Poetry Aloud'. The Department also regularly organises lecture series which are open to all students, such as 'Venice and the Cultural Imagination' (2009-10) and the Late Summer Lectures organised by our postgraduate students. Students are welcome to attend many events hosted by the University's research centres and institutes, particularly the Institute of Advanced Study (IAS), the Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies and the Centre for Medical Humanities in all of which the Department plays a prominent role. The IAS offers a wide range of inderdisciplinary lectures and events, and the Department has played a key role in its prominent Public Lecture Series, such as The Recovery of Beauty (2011-12).
