''The powerful marvel of irony': Derrida and Structural Irony,' by Maebh Long (Durham University)

A staff and postgraduate research seminar.

Maebh Long's thesis entitled A Theory of Irony: Derrida and Parabasis works to formulate a theory of irony based on the parataxis and parabasis that is both performed and described in the works of Jacques Derrida. Irony is read as a non-propositional element of language exploited by writers who recognise the importance of the figurative or non-thetic. This understanding of Derrida's work provides a radical extension of a unique ironic tradition that enables the work to engage in thinkingclosed to traditional thetic approaches. Her thesis reads Derrida in conjunction with Plato, Friedrich Schlegel, Maurice Blanchot and Emmanuel Levinas.

IMRS/IMEMS Conference Series Summer 2013

Three conferences in June and July will mark the launch of the University’s Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies and the Durham exhibition of the Lindisfarne Gospels, and celebrate the rich resources of the city’s historic libraries – Cosin’s Library, the Cathedral Library, and the Library of Ushaw College.
