Late Summer Lectures: Rock Rolls over the World: France, Italy, Germany and Greece

25th September 2012, 17:30 to 19:00, Alington House, Durham, Maria Kouvarou (Department of Music)

The Late Summer Lectures (LSLS) is a series organised in Durham and Newcastle to foster interest in the Arts and Humanities. For more information on the LSLS, please visit our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/LSLS2012

The same lecture will also be presented at the Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle, the following day.

For the past few decades it seems that the whole world shares a common popular music; that each country creates music which is based on the same musical idioms as other countries, most commonly Britain and the United States. Though some might argue that popular music is globalized and that great part of the international popular music today is an imitation of the popular music of the two centres mentioned above, I will try to present a different version of the story. In doing this I aim to critically reflect on a phenomenon which is often taken for granted: the ʽcommon internationalʼ popular music of today which, instead, could be seen as many ʽdifferent nationalʼ appropriations of the same musical idioms, used differently in each country, both musically and also ideologically. I believe that such a discussion would be of interest for people of various backgrounds and interests, as popular music is something that we constantly live our lives in.
