Abstract

Languages and identities are constantly changing and seem to be changing ever more rapidly. The paper explores the potential new identity in Europe - a "European identity" - and the role languages and language teaching might play. It considers what function languages have in two aspects. First there is the development of identity - the deliberate cultivation identity by institutions. Second there is the evolution of identity as a consequence of life changes for individuals and societies.
