EdD: Thesis and Field of Study

Thesis

You will work individually under the supervision of one or more members of the staff of the School of Education on a topic you have chosen in consultation with your supervisor.  This will often be related to your work in your institution, and will involve an independent investigation demonstrating your ability to test ideas, whether your own or those of others, and to understand the relationship of the theme of your investigation to a wider field of knowledge.

The thesis must be clear, concise, well written and orderly in arrangement. It should represent an original contribution to knowledge and include matter worthy of publication, though it need not be submitted in a form suitable for publication. The thesis will have a maximum of 60,000 words.

Field of Study

You may already have a proposal for a thesis upon starting the programme, but many students begin to formulate their proposal whilst taking modules. For example, an assignment for one of the units may provide the opportunity to explore a theme prior to commitment to it for the thesis.

Your thesis topic will need to align with an area of research being conducted within the department.  More information can be found on our staff profiles and our research pages.
