The EdD Team

EdD Programme Director: Professor Carl Bagley, PhD FRSA
"Following a first degree in politics and sociology and post-graduate study, I qualified as a community social worker, working in inner-city areas of the UK as part of a multi-ethnic team developing youth work strategies to combat racism. Subsequently, this interest in anti-racism and an underlying commitment to social justice, informed my early research at various higher education institutions, before I joined Durham in 1999.
More recently my research in the field of educational sociology has broadened to encompass critical arts-based research and what may be termed 'policy ethnography', in which government educational initiatives are explored through researcher immersion in the communities they impact upon. Moreover, in bringing those community-based perspectives and feelings to life, and to enhance audience understanding, I not only write about the findings but draw on the arts (music, painting, poetry, photography, drama, and dance) to transform the data into a staged performance. The research is used to inform my teaching on the policy studies and qualitative methods modules and the supervision of postgraduate research in those fields.
As Director of the EdD I am responsible for the overall day-to-day management and delivery of the programme, and I work in collaboration with a team of academic, administrative and secretarial colleagues, to deliver what we hope is a stimulating, enlightening, and enjoyable EdD experience."

Thesis Phase Coordinator: Dr Richard Remedios
"I am a social psychologist interested in the factors that influence students' motivation for studying. I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Stirling in Scotland and came to Durham in April, 2006.
My main research interest is motivation and in particular the factors that influence individuals' motivation for studying across all types of learning environments e.g. schools, further education, higher education, workplace.
For the EdD programme, I look after students in their thesis phase and address issues such as identifying suitable supervisors for students and generally monitoring the student/supervisor relationship throughout the thesis phase. I also try and help students with issues related to analysing statistical data.
I am always keen to hear from students about their experiences and am usually available if you need to chat (via phone or email) about anything related to your thesis"
