Doctorate in Education (EdD)
The EdD has been specifically designed to meet the needs of educational professionals in teaching, management or administration, in all sectors of education, from primary to higher education. It will equip you with wide-ranging knowledge of essential issues in a range of topics and in the analysis and development of research, and enable you to develop an in-depth understanding of specific topics related to your work.
Most students wishing to work at doctoral level in education have already been working in the education service for a number of years, as lecturers, teachers, administrators, advisers, inspectors, etc. For some, the established PhD route of individual, in-depth study of one specialised topic is the most appropriate approach to research, and we welcome such applicants. For many others, however, there is a need for a new approach. The EdD has been designed to provide a professionally relevant high level degree which offers the opportunity to study educational issues and develop research skills in order to carry out doctoral level research. The programme provides a broad-based knowledge of a number of aspects of education through a system of taught modules that develop a base for the thesis and its opportunity to research a specific issue of professional concern in depth.
Our EdD Alumni page contains the thesis titles and supervisory team details of recently completed EdD students.
Structure of the Programme
The programme has been designed to offer optimum flexibility in its provision. To increase the choice, some modules are shared with our MA in Education students. Consequently we are able to offer three separate study routes for the EdD (click on the links below or see menu on left hand side of this page):
Each route offers a different pattern of teaching, but all require you to complete the same basic programme structure:
- Six taught modules during the Taught Phase of the programme
-
One thesis (maximum length of 60,000 words) during the Thesis/Research phase
