About Us

The School of Education is one of the leading departments for education in the UK, regularly featuring in the top ten in national league tables such as The Times Good University Guide and The Complete University Guide. Our teaching has been awarded a score of 23 out of 24 from the Quality Assurance Agency and our research is recognised for its world-class and international quality (85% in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise).

We are a large department composed of some 50 academic staff, 400 undergraduates and nearly 700 postgraduate students (including our PGCE students). We are also supported by a large number of partners from schools and colleges across the region. We have a strong international links welcoming international students, postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars from all over the world.

Our aim is to foster internationally excellent research and teaching, working on the most important and critical issues in education, and enabling scholarship to play a key role in advancing debate, informing policy and shaping agendas.

Our Programmes

We embrace diversity by promoting and maintaining an inclusive and supportive work and study environment that enables all members of our University community to achieve their full potential. We have courses to suit many prospective students, whether you are looking to become a qualified teacher or already working in the education sector and looking for further or training and development, or whether you keen to study education as an academic discipline in its own right, at either undergraduate or postgraduate level. While our standards are high, we have always welcomed students from all walks of life - those changing career direction or looking for further professional development, as well as recent graduates. We are based at two locations:  the Durham city campus (which is the home of our Education Studies degree, PGCE degrees and postgraduate programmes), and the Queen's campus at Stockton (where our BA in Primary Education is based).

Our Research

We have a vibrant research culture in the School of Education, and our staff and postgraduate research students are engaged in research within a wide range of educational fields. For further information please refer to our current research webpages and staff profiles.
