Undergraduate Study in Engineering
The unique College system at Durham means all our undergraduates are members of a College which provides a warm welcome and a community in which you not only study but have sports, arts and social facilities. This enables our students to gain an all rounded University experience.
The top five reasons for coming to Durham to study Engineering are:
- Outstanding course content equips young Engineers for the 21st century, with a common first two years before specialisation in one of nine final year streams. This allows an informed choice of course options as Engineering is not commonly taught in Schools. The course includes essential management studies.
- Excellent research led teaching. The latest National Student Survey results shows that 90% of Durham Engineering students are satisfied with the quality of the course. (Source: www.unistats.com 2008-01-22) The academic staff at the School are all actively engaged in research at the frontiers of modern Engineering design and practice. This excitement and knowledge is brought into the undergraduate programme through design projects, the final year project and lectures in the third and fourth years.
- Accredited courses. All our Engineering degrees are fully accredited by the four major Engineering institutions (ICE, IstrucE, IMechE and IET) this means that your degree provides an important first step to becoming a Chartered Engineer.
- Enviable external reputation. In the Times Good University Guide for 2010, Durham is ranked 3rd behind Oxford and Cambridge. Our graduates are also highly sought after by employers.
- Study abroad. In your third year you can replace study at Durham with study at an overseas institution. Currently we have links with Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain, Germany, France and Canada. Language tuition is provided from L1 if you are not already fluent in the language of study.
Durham University offers two Engineering degrees for undergraduates:
Both courses benefit from Durham's integrated approach to Engineering, starting with study of all disciplines and specialisation in later years. More information on Engineering degree courses can be found here
Further information on the courses can be found around this site: the course handbooks describe each year of both our Engineering courses in detail, there is a section on applying including detailed advice from the Admissions tutor on what we are looking for and you can also find out what our students think. If after all that you still have queries please contact us using the details on the left.
