Our students say
'I enjoyed my third year in particular and my dissertation (a web based tool for detecting vulnerabilities in web applications) was a key factor in landing my job!'
Adam (graduated 2010)
'University life is not just about learning; it is about developing yourself. Studying Software Engineering at Durham didn't just provide me with a world-class education in the latest technologies but also provided me with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of Computer Science and a wealth of opportunities to develop myself professionally.'
Andy (graduated 2010)
'Studying Computer Science at Durham has been extremely rewarding. I graduated with the confidence to pick up new programming languages and to formulate solutions to problems using previous first hand experience. In my final year I was able to pursue my interest in parallel processing on general purpose hardware and am currently starting a PhD in this area.'
Laurence (graduated 2010)
'All the Computer Science staff at Durham are very keen to help and always do their best to reply to emails and make themselves available for additional assistance... little things really make the difference.
You get out of Durham Computer Science, what you put in.'Tom (graduated 2010)
'The first few years at Durham are completely general to all engineering streams, giving you valuable insight and knowledge into all aspects of engineering. You don't specialise until your third year, meaning you can make an informed choice about which discipline you want to go into rather than being locked to a specific stream from day one.'
Marek (graduated 2009)
'The fact that engineering at Durham begins with two years of general engineering where topics covered include civil, electrical, electronic and mechanical provides an excellent grounding for any engineer. During a mechanical work experience at a power station I was really able to impress and be of use with the electrical engineering I had learnt in Year 2. Another factor that makes engineering at Durham attractive is that for those like me who are not 100% sure which stream they want to pursue. The decision of stream does not have to be made until the end of Year 2, and by this stage it is clear what you enjoy.'
Patrick (graduated 2009)
'In a competitive jobs market, gaining a general engineering degree from Durham provides you with a variety of skills that are desirable to world class engineering organisations. From group design projects to industrial visits, the School not only strives to develop you as an individual, but also as a team member. The skill sets you develop at Durham enable you to embrace challenging objectives, meet imminent deadlines and maintain focus on delivery under pressure, abilities desirable to any employer.'
Rich (graduated 2009)
'Such a good 3 years I'm applying to come back again next year!'
Simon (graduated 2009)
'The Software Engineering experience with the Computer Science Department has been completely enlightening and fulfilling. The Department has been suportive especially in difficult times and have many areas of support available to their students. They have helped me enrich a skill that will open doors for me after my time in Durham.'
Ife (graduated 2009)
'I wasn't quite sure what to expect when coming to England to follow this course. What I discovered over my three years of Comp Sci is a lovely little department with hard working staff that are always available to help, a great number of topics that were both interesting and challenging, and long-lasting friendships that developped through hardship and fun! The experience I gained from coming here is extremely valuable and useful. I would do the same thing if I had to choose again!'
Tom (graduated 2009)
'Without any formal computing background, I was unsure if computer science was for me or not. However, I can honestly say that I do not regret for a single second choosing to study in the Computer Science department at Durham. I know of no other department (nor university) that provides its students with so much support, and genuinely has an interest in the well-being and academic achievement of its students. I feel privileged to have been a part of such an outstanding department, and will be sad to leave!'
Tim (graduated 2008)
'One of the most important things I wanted from a university was a department that really cares about their students. The staff in the department are friendly and approachable, and will go out of their way to help when you need assistance. On the open days I was incredibly impressed by Durham's collegiate structure, and the Department of Computer Science had friendly staff and helpful students who answered any questions.' The course also helped me secure a summer internship at IBM's prestigious labs in Hampshire. I found that the languages and skills I learnt from the course, in particular Java and project management, could be directly applied in a real-world business scenario.'Alex (graduated 2008)
'Amazing experience. Anything you do will either help you develop as a person or be a lot of fun, usually both.'
Yacine (graduated 2008)
'I'm not your average Computer Science student- I'm female and before I came to university I'd never done any programming, or any computing at all really - but the lecturers here are really helpful and always willing to give up their time to help if you have any problems, and I had a great time and really enjoyed the course! I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, even if you have no experience in computing.'
Sarah (graduated 2007)
