Tall buildings: can we make them safe enough?
Introduction by Dr Richard Scott. Drawing on the key incidents of Ronan Point and 9/11, Stuart Alexander will explain and illustrate the concepts of robustness, disproportionate collapse and risk assessment, and show how the criteria used by structural engineers to design tall buildings in the 21st century can achieve a safe design.
Stuart has just retired from WSP where he was for 10 years Group Technical Coordinator, responsible for a team advancing and supporting building design through publications, training, research and expert advice. He is well known in the industry, where he has recently published ‘Tall buildings: commerce or sculpture?’ and ‘Why does our concrete still crack and leak?’
