Technology Enhanced Learning
Our Vision
To advance technology enhanced learning through research innovation and software development.
Group Research Aims
- to explore ways to promote active student engagement in the learning process.
- to seek new ways in which learning can be supported by technology but not driven by it.
- to examine the suitability of existing learning environments and consider how improved design may lead to more effective learning.
- to ascertain how technology can be used to increase effective use of teaching resources and increase personalisation and flexibility in the learning process.
Research areas and current projects
Our research areas cover three main spectrums of Teaching and Learning, Technology, Student support and Curriculum. We have been successful in taking forward both small and large projects. For example, members of the TEL group, along with colleagues from Education and Psychology departments have been successful in their £1.5m application to the TLRP TEL fund for the SynergyNet project.
Here is a list of our current research areas:
- SynergyNet Project (Multi-Touch in Education)
- Collaborative multi-touch Development
- Replicator - 3D Scanning and Printing for multidisciplinary research
- Technology Enhanced Campus Development
- Interactive Lectures
- Collaborative knowledge environments
- Web-based education
- Augmented Reality (AR) in Education
- Folksonomies and Feedback
- Improving Project Comprehension Using RCS Repository Analysis
- Improving motivation using Avatars
- Working Collaboratively With A Large Image

PhD Opportunities
Our research group is large, lively, dynamic, and growing, however we still have opportunities for PhD applicants to work with the group either full time or part time. We are working on diverse research themes, so if you are interested in studying for a PhD with us, then we encourage you to contact one of our supervisory team members (**) to discuss your specific research interests. When completing the online PhD application, please explicitly state that you wish to work within TEL, and if you have a particular research idea, make this clear also.
