What happens during a chemical reaction? How do atoms move to break and form bonds?
Why is one outcome more likely than another? These are some of the questions we seek to
answer. Experimentally, we undertake very detailed measurements of reactive collisions
between atoms and molecules. We use laser spectroscopic techniques to determine both
the quantum state and the scattering angle of the products.
Theoretically, we model these processes to reproduce and explain the experimental
findings and to gain greater insight into their nature.

We have close links to and joint projects with other groups within the Chemistry and Physics Departments at Durham. External collaborations include groups at the University of Bristol, the University of Cambridge, and the Universidad Complutense, Madrid.
We are currently working on the following projects:
Degree and Ph.D. in Chemical Physics in the research group of Prof. Karl H. Welge at the University of Bielefeld, Germany (1998).
Postdoctoral research associate with Prof. Mike Ashfold at the University of Bristol (1998-2000).
Research visit at Universidad Complutense, Madrid, Spain with the group of Prof. F. Javier Aoiz (2000).
Lectureship in Physical Chemistry at the University of Durham (from 2000).
