PhD Title

Mt Kinabalu Borneo: Building New Crust in SE Asia

Project Description

Despite its prominence and intriguing geological setting, the mechanism and emplacement history of the 4095m high Mt Kinabalu granitic pluton in Borneo has yet to be constrained. Through the collection of a comprehensive sample set following field work on the mountain, followed by the collection of a complete and comprehensive data set of geochemical data collected from laboratory testing in the United Kingdom, this project hopes to determine these processes. It is hoped that these results will reveal various details on the mountain’s geological history, from the formation of the granitic melts from which it formed and the evolution of these melts, to the method of emplacement and its internal structure, and will then investigate the implications of these results for other intrusions worldwide and their involvement in the production of continental crust.
