Digital Visualisation & Mapping Facilities

Digital, GPS-based acquisition, visualisation and analysis of field data are increasingly used as standard by a wide range of environmental, engineering and geoscience industries. The department has extensive digital mapping facilities and experienced staff to run the equipment. We have invested heavily in the purchasing of state of the art GPS, GIS, survey hardware, laptops and PDA's.

Data Acquisition

  • Digitising facilities
  • Virtual Outcrop Models - using laser
  • Digital Geological Survey & Mapping- Real-time kinematic GPS equipment provides extremely rapid spatial measurements with centimetre (or sub-cm) precision.

Data Visualisation

  • collaborative interpretation of 3D digital data, using the HIVE ["highly immersive visualisation environment"] in the e-Science Research Institute at Durham
