(6 December 2005)

Nicola DePaola has been awarded the 2006 Fearnsides Prize by the Yorkshire Geological Society. The picture shows Nic receiving his award at the AGM held recently in York from the YGS President (John Powell). Also pictured are Donatella Zappala, Nic’s partner, and Ian Jackson of the British Geological Survey. The national award is made each year to individuals under the age of 30 who have made distinguished contribution through published geological research linked to the North of England. His groundbreaking papers concerning deformation patterns in oblique rift basins were focused in the region of the Northumberland Basin and were published in the Journal of Structural Geology and Journal of the Geological Society. Nic successfully obtained his PhD from Durham in 2005 and is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher based in the University of Perugia, Italy. Many congratulations to Nic from all in the Department.
