Geothermal borehole

(4 January 2011)

Newcastle University & Durham University have successfully bid for 400,000 of direct funding from DECC (Department of Energy & Climate Change) to drill the next geothermal borehole in the NE.  Following on from the Eastgate 2 well in 2010, the two universities will drill at the Science Central site in Newcastle (old Scottish & Newcastle brewery site).  The well will aim to tap into geothermal fluids thought to be associated with the large fault systems associated with the Weardale Granite and already proved to have geothermal potential at Weardale.
