Dr Nicola De Paola Geological Society of London Young Author 2005

(9 January 2006)

Recently graduated PhD student, Dr Nicola De Paola has been awarded the Geological Society of London Young Author award for 2005. This is given to the person under the age of 30 who is adjudged to have written the best scientific paper published in the Journal of the Geological Society of London in each year. The judges are the Editors and members of the Editorial Board who are drawn from a very broad range of disciplines. This is in addition to winning the Ramsay Medal from the UK Tectonic Studies Group. This is a very prestigious international medal awarded annually for the best published paper by a postgraduate student. The winning paper - co-authored with R.E. Holdsworth, K.J.W. McCaffrey (both in Durham Earth Sciences) and M.R. Barchi - was published during 2005 in the Journal of Structural Geology, and is titled: "Partitioned transtension: an alternative to basin inversion models." This is the 3rd award that Nicola has received in recognition of his outstanding PhD research - he was awarded the Fearnsides Prize by the Yorkshire Geological Society late last year (see previous news item, Dec 6th)
