Durham University Service for Students with Disabilities

Student Support

Upon provision of appropriate medical or psychological diagnostic evidence, and after consultation with an adviser, we can offer support to students who are experiencing difficulty as a result of a recognised disability, specific learning difference (SpLD), mental health problem or medical condition.

This support will include the following:

  • Advice and support from DUSSD's qualified Disability Advisers, including advice on applying for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA)
  • Appropriate assessment of your support needs
  • An internal Recommended Reasonable Adjustments (RRA) report, detailing reasonable adjustments university departments and colleges can make to support you

If applicable to you, it may also include:

  • assistance in requesting exam concessions and support/specialist equipment
  • access to Study Skills support
  • access to a proof-reading service
  • short-term loans of equipment e.g. digital recorders and laptop computers (subject to availability)
  • access to an appointment with a local psychologist (all students must pay psychologist's fees themselves. Some financial assistance may be available to those who are eligible through the Access to Learning Fund. Senior Tutors can advise.)
  • sourcing personal non-medical helpers, note-takers, academic mentors and library helpers to assist you (if you receive DSA funding for this)

In addition to the above, DUSSD also offers a screening service for previously undetected specific learning differences (SpLDs).

Support is also provided by other key sections of the university and includes:

  • provision of accessible college accommodation (where available)
  • pastoral and welfare support via the colleges' support system
  • assistance in negotiating extensions to coursework deadlines (if applicable and where appropriate)
  • specialist counselling via the University's Counselling service
  • extended library loans
  • additional support from library staff
  • access to an adapted Study Room, with specialist equipment including height adjustable work surfaces, PCs with assistive technology and a scanner
  • access to assistive technology on the University's intranet
