Dr. Li Ran
Li is a Lecturer in Power Electronics in the New and Renewable Energy
Group, School of Engineering, Durham University.
Li earned a PhD degree from Chongqing University, China in 1989. After working as a lecturer at Chongqing, he joined Aberdeen University as a research fellow. At Aberdeen (1993-1996), he was involved in research on Marine Electrical Propulsion and Offshore Electrical Systems.
He then worked at the universities of Nottingham and Heriot-Watt as a research associate (1996-1999). His work at Nottingham was to investigate the Electromagnetic Compatibility in industrial drives. He returned to Offshore Electrical Engineering at Heriot-Watt; a paper describing the team’s study on voltage source converter d.c. interconnection of offshore oil rigs received a Stanley Gray Award - Offshore Technology from the Institute of Marine Engineers, London, in 1999. Between 1999 and 2003, Li was with Northumbria University where he fitted in the Power and Control Research Group and shared the responsibility of teaching in the Electrical and Electronic Courses.
Trained in Power Engineering and Power Electronics, Li is interested in the generation, transmission and distribution of Electrical Energy. He also likes to investigate some specialist problems in the design and operation of drives and other systems of Electrical Energy Utilisation.
