School of Applied Social Sciences

  • support groups for Black students, gay and lesbian students and disabled students (facilitated by external paid consultants).
  • distinct taught module on their Masters programme that includes specific teaching on a wide range of diversity issues, such as gender, race, sexuality, disability, poverty, mental health etc. Students also undertake project work on these issues.
  • the Centre has an equality statement and a Code of Conduct, agreed by both students and staff, which seeks to positively and proactively guide the life of the centre and those who work and study there.
  • the TLC is made up of local partner agencies from the state and voluntary sector. One of the partners is for black practice learning, based in Newcastle, which allows the Centre to ensure that black students in practice are supervised by black practitioners and also, for any student, there are opportunities for practice placements with black service users.
