Biography

Ms. Loukia Lazarou is a graduate of Charles's University in Prague. She studied Music Pedagogy and had her Master's Degree on Choir Conducting working with Boni Pueri Choir (Young Men's Ensemble) for her graduation recital.
She started playing the violin from the age of five and she also plays the piano and guitar. Lazarou was also a member of the Cyprus Youth Symphonic Orchestra (first violins section) for four years, and was also a member of a Folkloric Group in Cyprus ('Vasilitzia'). She has travelled to many countries with the group for festivals and international folk competitions such as Sweeden, Mexico, Finland, Lithuania, Esthonia, Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Germany, France and so on. Ms. Lazarou is now a PhD Candidate at Durham university under the supervision of Prof. Bennett Zon (Department of Music) and Dr. Rachel Colls (Department of Geography) researching on an interdisciplinary project.

Her research interests are:
- Gender and Music (influences by psychological, cultural, religious, political and geographical factors);
- Feminist Approaches to Music, Critical Theory;
- Female Conductors and the career of conducting/ Gendered Nature of Training Conductors;
- Gender and Performance Theory;
- Geographies of the body (male/female conductors), applied on musicianship and practise.
