Photographing Hadrian's Wall (1880-1920). Visual perceptions of a Roman monument.
Abstract
My doctoral research focuses on the photography of early excavations of Hadrian's Wall, mostly between 1880 and 1920. This was a significant transition period in archaeology in Britain, which saw a move from the antiquary movement to a more established profession, with the emergence of new practices and methods. My analysis will explore, first, the photographic techniques used during this period. Secondly, an analysis of the photographers will be undertaken, looking at whether distinct groups made different selections on what to photograph and whether these selections changed over time. Finally, an assessement will be made on whether there is new information to be gained from this source of information.
