Biography

I am social psychologist interested in the factors that influence students' motivation for studying. I completed my undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Stirling in Scotland and came to Durham in April, 2006. I left Durham in 2013 though I still maintain research links with the School of Education and still supervise several PhD and EdD students.

Research Interests

My main research interest is motivation and in particular the factors (e.g., personality, pressure to perform well) that influence individuals' experiences prior to and after achievement-related tasks (e.g., exams).

One line of research I am involved in is examining where teachers look when they are in classrooms. In these studies, we use eye-tracking to assess direction and duration and then examine students’/pupils’ experiences in these classrooms.

A second line of research I am involved in looks at the effects of the messages pupils perceive there are receiving in educational settings. The concept is known as "fear appeals". We are keen to see whether pupils perceive messages and what the relationship their perceptions have with their emotions, self-efficacy, goal adoption and educational outcomes.

A third research interest I have involves examining whether individuals have introspective access to their goals. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) has been used to examine biases such as prejudice and we are currently looking at whether IATs can be used to assess goal adoption. We are also looking at whether goals can be primed with participants knowing.

If you would like to know more about any of the above work, feel free to contact me.
