Biography
Robert Schütze is Professor of European Law at Durham University. He is a constitutional scholar with a particular expertise in the law of the European Union and comparative federalism. He joined Durham Law School in 2005, where he teaches European constitutional law and European competition law. Having studied German and English law, he completed his doctoral thesis at the European University Institute, where it received the 'Europa Prize' for the best European law thesis between 2003 and 2007. He was a trainee at the Legal Service of the European Commission, Germany's Permanent Representation at the EU and in the Chambers of former Advocate General Jacobs at the European Court of Justice.
Professor Schütze has published extensively in English, French, and German, and is the author of two innovate textbooks: one on “European Constitutional Law”, and a shorter one called “An Introduction to European Law”. He has been a Visiting Professor or Fellow at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law (London), the Centre for European Legal Studies (Cambridge), Fribourg University (Switzerland), the Institute of European and Comparative Law (Oxford), LUISS Guido Carli University (Rome), and the Max-Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law(Heidelberg). In Michaelmas 2013, he will be a Fulbright Schuman Research Scholar at Harvard University.
Research
Professor Schütze’s research interests lie in the fields of European constitutional law and comparative federalism. His monograph "From Dual to Cooperative Federalism: The Changing Structure of European Law" argues that the European Union should be understood as a federal union whose relationship to its Member State has however changed with time. The book received the "Best Book" award of the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES), and has had a pioneering impact on the academic literature on the legal nature of the European Union. He is presently finishing a book on “Foreign Affairs and the European Constitution: Selected Essays” (with Cambridge University Press), and has given evidence to the Foreign Commonwealth Office in that context during the government's "Balance of Competences Review". He also edits – with Professor Takis Tridimas (London) – the “Oxford Principles of European Union Law”. This multi-volume work is intended to provide a comprehensive and authoritative analysis of European Union law.
Professor Schütze is the principal investigator of the “Neo-Federalism” Project – funded by the European Research Council. This four-year project investigates how political power should be divided within and among national peoples, and especially analyses whether the federal principle could prove a philosophical key to the contemporary legal developments in the international and (sub)national spheres.
